Deleting Your MetaTalk Account
You can request deletion of your MetaTalk account at any time. Deletion is irreversible. Below you will find how to send the request, which data is permanently erased, and which data is retained and why.
1. How to send your deletion request
There are two routes; both reach the same result.
- In the mobile app: Open the account deletion flow from the profile screen and complete the two-step confirmation by entering your password. It takes effect immediately.
- If you cannot access the app: If you have uninstalled the app or cannot sign in, send us a deletion request from your account's registered email address using the button below. You do not need to reinstall the app.
Once we receive your request we verify your identity and complete it within 30 days at the latest. If the address you write from is not your account's registered email address, we cannot verify your identity.
2. Data that is permanently erased
- Your name, profile photo, bio, university, languages, levels, learning goal, social links, availability, and time zone
- Your username is replaced with an anonymous value and your profile stops being visible on the platform
- Your push notification device records — deleted entirely
- Your profile photo file and any résumé file you uploaded
- Your ability to sign in — the account is closed and your email address is rendered unrecognisable in the identity system
3. Data that remains, and why
- Your lesson history and MetaCoin ledger: the MetaCoin economy is a closed system and every movement has two sides; deleting these rows would leave your peer's balance and history inconsistent
- Your messages: message content is not deleted, because a conversation is also your peer's record and one-sided deletion would damage their history. You can retract your own message from within the app for 24 hours after sending it — this empties the message's content
- Ratings you gave and received: peers' rating averages depend on them
- Reports, message content copied as evidence for a report, and enforcement records: account deletion must not be a way to escape enforcement
- An irreversible digest (hash) of the deleted account's email address: retained indefinitely to prevent repeatedly opening accounts with the same address to claim the starting MetaCoin advance again. Your email address cannot be reconstructed from this digest
- In contact form and job application records your name and email are masked, but the message, cover letter, and application answers remain as text
4. Retention periods
| Data type | Retention period |
|---|---|
| Account and profile data | Until you delete your account |
| Lesson history, MetaCoin ledger, ratings | Indefinite — retained after account deletion |
| Messages | Indefinite — retained in your peer's record |
| Reports and enforcement records | Indefinite |
| Email digest of a deleted account | Indefinite |
| Push notification device records | Fully deleted when the account is deleted |
These periods match the retention table in the Privacy Policy; see the policy for the full list.
5. What you should know
- Deletion is irreversible; there is no recovery window in which you could restore the account
- For security you are asked to re-enter your password before deletion proceeds
- If you had a lesson that started within the last 12 hours, deletion is temporarily refused; you can try again once that window passes
- Your pending and scheduled lessons are cancelled and your peers are notified
- Your MetaCoin balance is not refunded; because the account is closed you can no longer reach your balance or your transaction ledger
- If there is an open report or enforcement action about you, deleting the account does not end it
- Partial deletion is not offered: deleting only certain data is not a separate option, a request covers the whole account
